.
By continuing stacking intervals of 3rds (1,3,5,7)
we extend the Major, Minor, Dominant 7, chords adding the 9(2nd), 11(4th)
, and the 13(6th).This sound is the basis of modern piano and modern arrangements.Think
Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea.
.
.The
4th-5ths tuning of the Stick allows a simple approach
.
1) The left hand plays - 1, 3rd, 7th.This allow
the root to be on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd,
bass string and the 3rd, and 7th, around the
middle C octave. If the chord is too low
it will begin to sound muddy.
2) The right hand plays - 4th - 5th, 6th, 9th.
.
5th, 9th, and 13th shapes over
3 strings- key of C
..4-5th,
9th, and 13th shapes over treble strings- key of C
Practice
• Work out the basic chord structures adding the upper structure triads:
Major 769,
Dominant 7 69, Minor 769, Minor 7 69, Minor 7 b569, Dominant 7 b9 etc
• Work up the neck over 3 strings.
• Work across the neck with the over lapping patterns of the upper
structure triads.
• Try reversing the hands.
.
II V7 I
This is a study of bass chords and upper structure triads moving around
standard changes. The bass carries the Root 3rd, and 7th.The treble strings
take the 5th, 6th, and 9th. You can also include passing notes between
chords as you get use to the changes.
Practice
• Where are the II,V7, I changes? What key are they in? Is there a
key change?
• Work out the intervals in relation to the root of the chords.
• What notes move out of the upper structure triads for melodic purposes?
• Try to apply to different keys and different positions on the neck
• Can you add a passing bass note between chords?
• What comping rhythms could you apply to the chords?
