Il mio viaggio musicale è cominciato
da piccolo con l'organo,
tuttavia con l'arrivo dell'adolescenza
e con essa la ricerca della
mia voce, mi resi conto che uno strumento
con svariati registri
ma non una voce peculiare non poteva accompagnarmi
in questa
ricerca. La mia attenzione venne catturata
da un basso ( quello
che suonava mia padre da giovane), e dopo
un breve periodo da
autodidatta cominciai a studiare lo strumento
ed il giorno in cui il
mio insegnante di basso (l'incredibile
Federico Gori) mi spiegò la
tecnica del tapping mi ha cambiato musicalmente.
Quel giorno si
aprí una porta verso nuovo mondo.
Non ero ancora a conoscenza
dell'esistenza del Chapman Stick e quindi
per espandere la tecnica
di tapping acquistai un basso a 6 corde.
Successivamente, quando
ascoltai per la prima volta i King Crimson
rimasi impressionato e
mi resi conto che quello strumento doveva
essere mio. In ogni modo,
non era facile trovare uno strumento del
genere in Italia ne tantomeno
avere la possibilità di provarlo
come si fa con gli strumenti che non
abbiamo mai suonato prima. Così
per un po' di tempo accantonai
l'idea però quando entrai a suonare
con una band progressive
strumentale cominciai a scrivere canzoni
in tapping e dopo aver
comprato anche un basso a 7 corde decisi
che dovevo comprarmi
uno Stick. In ogni caso avrei dovuto provarlo
prima di comprarlo,
quindi c'era una sola strada da percorrere:
comprare uno strumento
usato. Trovai un grand stick ed un Ns
stick, la scelta non era facile
ma l'Ns stick mi dava l'idea di essere
più versatile visto che oltre in
tapping si può suonare con le tecniche
più comuni di fingerstyle e slap
e quindi mi immaginavo sarebbe stato più
facile da inserire in un gruppo.
La persona che lo vendeva era un tastierista
e lo aveva acquistato
pensando si suonasse allo stesso modo,
ma ovviamente così non era,
quindi se ne voleva liberare. Non appena
misi le mani sullo strumento
mi resi conto che era lo strumento per
me, il tapping riusciva senza sforzi,
era chiaramente uno strumento nato per
quella tecnica.
Come succede spesso, ho acquistato lo
strumento ad un prezzo
conveniente e senza dover aspettare un
anno per la consegna.
Da quel giorno mi si é aperto un
mondo: ho potuto ampliare i miei
studi di tapping del basso senza più
i limiti fisici del basso, ho potuto
dare vita a linee di basso che avevo in
mente senza doverle adattare
allo strumento, rafforzandole in alcuni
casi con degli accordi o delle
tecniche percussive. Cinque anni fa ho
acquistato un Chapman stick
10 corde perché il circolo doveva
chiudersi. Il Chapman stick mi sta
aiutando ad imparare tecniche che possono
essere applicate all'Ns.
In fin dei conti sono due strumenti incredibili,
sia per loro voce sia per
le opportunità creative che offrono.
Secondo il mio punto di vista l'Ns
è più efficace per espandere
le linee di basso e suona meglio del Chapman
quando vengono utilizzate tecniche più
tradizionali o percussive, mentre
il Chapman stick consente di acquisire
maggiore indipendenza delle
mani e quindi melodie più articolate
senza incrociare mai la mano della
ritmica. I due strumenti rappresentano
uno stimolo costante a sperimentare
ed a creare idee sempre nuove.

The NS/Stick, a door to creativity.
My musical journey started by playing
the organ, but I quit my studies as an adolescent since I was searching
for my own voice and I realized that
the organ which is an instrument having a number of sounds was lacking
the "unique" sound I was looking for.
Next came the bass, my dad used to play it so I picked it up and after
a
short self-thought phase I started taking
lessons. One day my bass teacher ( the amazing Federico Gori)
showed me the tapping technique and that
was the day I saw the light. A gate to another world opened.
At that time the Chapman stick was still
unknown to me so I figured out by myself that more strings could
be
useful for expanding the tapping technique,
so I purchased a 6 string bass. Later on I discovered King Crimson
and I was impressed by that amazing instrument
and I wanted it so badly. Unfortunately, finding a Chapman stick
in Italy was very unlikely at that time
not to say having the chance of finding one to try it as I usually do when
playing
an unknown instrument. This resulted in
my giving up the idea, at least for a while until I joined an instrumental
progressive band which brought me to write
full-length tapping songs, so I purchased even a 7 string bass.
After that there was no way out, I had
to buy a stick. Anyway I was resolute to try it before buying it so it
has to be
a used one. After searching on the web
I found a Grand Stick and a Ns stick, choosing was not easy at all but
the Ns stick seemed to me more versatile
since it can be played by using tapping but also fingerstyle or slapping
which makes it a more suitable candidate
for a place in a band. The guy selling the instrument was a keyboardist
and he thought that playing the Ns stick
would be a piece of cake, wrong! So he wanted to sell it and get a profit
out of it. As soon as I laid my hands
on the instrument I was blown away by how natural tapping was, I felt it
was
my instrument. I bought the instrument
for a reasonable price without waiting a long year delivery.
From that day I was facing a brand new
world: I could expand my bass tapping studies having almost no limits
related to the instrument, I could think
about a bass line without adjusting to the instrument, sometimes I could
fatten
up my lines by adding chords or percussive
effects.
Five years ago I purchased a 10 string
Chapman stick as well for pursuing my journey, in fact by playing the
Chapman stick I am learning peculiar techniques
that can be applied to the Ns stick itself. Both instruments are
outstanding and they enable me to be creative
like with no other instrument. In my opinion the Ns stick is more
suitable for expanding bass lines and
it sounds better than the Chapman when using fingerstyle or slapping ,
on the other hand the Chapman stick is
more suitable for achieving 2 hand independence in addition to more
developed melodies with no worries about
crossing the two hands. Both instruments are an incredible tool for
experimenting and creating new ideas.

NS/Stick un portal a una nueva creatividad
Mi viaje musical empezó de pequeño
tocando el órgano, pero dejé los estudios de adolescente
mientras
buscaba mi voz como no me reconocia en
un instrumento que no tenia su voz propriamente dicha, dado
que tiene un montón de registros
diferentes. Por eso como en casa tenía un bajo ( el que tocaba mi
padre)
y tras un breve período de autodidacta
empecé con mis estudios. El día que me ha cambiado musicalmente
ha sido cuando mi profesor de bajo (el
increible Federico Gori) me ilustró la técnica de tapping.
Ese día se abrió un portal
hacia un nuevo mundo. Todavía no conocía el existencia del
Chapman stick, por
eso compré un bajo de 6 cuerdas
como necesitaba otra cuerda para expandir la técnica. Más
tarde en cuanto
conocí a King Crimson quedé
impresionado y me di cuenta de que ese tenía que ser mi instrumento.
De todas formas, no era facil conseguir
un instrumento así en Italia, ni siquiera tener la ocasión
de tocarlo
como se hace cada vez que consideras empezar
con un instrumento nuevo. Entonces, durante tiempo dejé
esta idea de lado, pero en cuanto entré
en una band progressive instrumental empecé a escribir canciones
en tapping, pues tras comprar incluso
un bajo de 7 cuerdas decidí que tenia que comprar un Stick. De todas
formas, tenía que tocarlo antes
de comprarlo, entonces había solo un camino: adquirir un instrumento
usado.
Encontré un grand stick y un NS/
Stick. Era muy dificil decidir, pero como el NS/Stick me daba la idea de
ser
más versatil, es decir se puede
tocar como un bajo con fingerstyle y slap también, a lo mejor era
más simple
de poner en un grupo. El que lo vendía
era un hombre que tocaba teclado y pensaba que fuera lo mismo,
por supuesto no lo era, entonces no lo
necesitaba más. Al tocar el instrumento me dí cuenta de que
era el
instrumento para mi, el tapping salía
sin esfuerzos ,era claro que estaba hecho para ser tocado de esa forma.
Como pasa muy a menudo conseguí
el instrumento a un precio bastante barato y sin tener que esperar un año
para que se me lo entregaran. A partir
de ese día se ha abierto un nuevo mundo: he podido expandir
mis
estudios de tapping de bajo como ya no
tenia los limites que tenia con el bajo. He empezado a desarrolar
líneas de bajo que me imaginaba
sin tener que ajustarlas al instrumento, a las vez fortaleciendo el ritmo
con
acordes u otros efectos percusivos. Hace
unos 5 años he adquirido un Chapman stick de 10 cuerdas como
tenía que cerrar el círculo
. El Chapman me está ayudando a aprender técnicas que se
pueden utilizar tambien
con el Ns. Al final son dos instrumentos
increibles , bien por su voz bien por las posibilidades compositivas
que ofrecen. El Ns,en mi opinión,
funciona mejor para expandir líneas de bajos y suena mejor con técnicas
percusivas y más tradicionales,
el Chapman permite adquirir más independencia de las manos y por
eso
melodías mas desarrolladas sin
cruzar con la mano que hace la ritmica. Los dos instrumentos representan
un estimulo constante a experimentar y
a sacar siempre nuevas ideas.
